Hydrangea grows up to 9 feet tall, and is found in woodlands and along stream banks in southeastern and central North America. Originally used by the Cherokee Indians in the form of a root decoction or tea as a remedy for occasional minor kidney complaints, Hydrangea became popular with early American settlers for similar therapeutic purposes. Today in Japan, a popular Hydrangea tea — called ama-cha is an infusion beverage made from tea leaves and Hydrangea petals. This valuable herb contains chromium, manganese, selenium, silicon, flavonoids, resins and saponins. Hydrangea’s solvent properties may nutritionally support the normal cleansing function of the urinary system.
